Hi Pete,

This is feedback to your plan. Great to see you have come to the end of the course. You have explained to me that for reasons to do with Fire Service branding and information management practices, you are not permitted to put the presentation slides for this plan on your blog. You have instead sent it to me on CD. It is an excellent presentation, helping to explain this plan quite nicely. I hope some day you are able to add the plan to this blog.

Project Goals
Nice and concise, sets the scene.

Background
You cover a lot of issues here Pete. Its a bit of work to keep them all in my head as I read through.. subtitles might have helped here:
*Fire Service restrictions on content policies or practices
*Delivery method - lab/workshops, chunked content, audio visual training aids, links to internet resources.
*Student articulated and agreed learning outcomes
*Existing resources audit. Looking on Youtube etc for other resources
*Design considerations abcdf

You have covered a lot in this background Pete.

Resources
Considering the Fire Service's concerns over restricting content, it might pay to insert mention of a design team in your ideas about resources. This might reassure them that the resources will be of high enough standard for publishing - especially open access publishing

Considerations
Dot points for this would be helpful for your supervisors I think Pete.. just so they can more easily see the things you are concerned about:
*National coordination
*Computer and software set up and accessibility and restrictions

The Outline
I think this was so brief, and actually repeats what has already been said, you should drop it out.

Project scope
Ok cool.. are these people ok about having their names associated with the project on your blog Pete? Just wondering in relation to some of the concerns the Fire Service has about publicity etc

Outline of Course
Its interesting for me to see that you are considering Blackboard or wikis. In actual fact, resources developed on wikis can be easily loaded in for display on Blackboard, but not the other way around. It might be good if you expanded your examples with some information about their benefits and shortfalls...

Its great that you are thinking about people learning off screen, but you are using the screen media to compliment those people's preferences (PDF with audio).

Personally, I find it really encouraging to see that you are suggesting the use of popular media sites. The site you mention such as Youtube and Slideshare offer the ability for people to display the media item directly on their own web page as though it was local media. So if the Fireservice have concerns about putting their stuff "out there" they can have the best of both worlds. They can have increased exposure and public accessing information on Youtube, and they can have the brand and identity management of displaying the media on their own website (but without the expense of serving large media files out to the public). Note that all the major political parties use Youtube in this way for example.

length of the programme
The 3 phase approach is pretty innovative Pete. I hope your colleagues like it.

Learning styles
Note the spelling of Wikipedia

Learning outcomes
Well outlined

Considerations
Good range, I especially appreciate the 3rd point regarding collaboration attempts

Sustainability
I especially like the economic consideration :) well put.

Access and Equity
It could have been expanded as it seems to me that this is a really strong point in your proposal.

Cultural Diversity
A good range of issues considered Pete. There are no real hard and fast "solutions" to these issues, so your feedback and authentic re-evaluations is a good approach - and a benefit of using a wiki by the way ;)

Time / Costs
Great to see this in there Pete. Not many others have done this, but I think it is a really strong point in a plan as it shows you have put a lot of thinking into how your plan could be implemented and what needs to be covered along the way.

I do think you will need to give yourself a LOT more time to Start implementing I.T side of course content and fine tune course content and lesson plans. You could however start very small.. such as simply developing a list of useful resources that are already online (such as good Wikipedia articles, along with a couple of videos on Youtube) and prepare them to CD and print. That might suffice for your phase 1 first step and use that to evaluate next steps as you say.

Good strong plan Pete. I had to work a bit to draw clarity out of a few areas, but over all I get it and can see ideas in there that you have drawn from the course. Thanks for completing, I hope you see progress for these ideas.

Regards

Cool Pete. If you would like any assistance in presenting, or would like to invite me in after or before your presentation on a free consultation arrangement, I'd be only too happy. I could talk about the Polytechnic's approach to public education, and highlight the national funding available for such things, and then hand it over to you to talk about specifics with the Fire Safety public education you are considering.

Will you hold on to the 2 or 3 phase approach we discussed? There was the open access and online materials based on popular media sites like Youtube and others for people to go through as a package of pre knowledge. And then those who want to go further with it will nominate themselves to attend training in their local fire station.. the training in the station is assessed to Unit Standards and could be used for further training such as a phase 3 of Fire Warden etc

Yes, reading whole articles now seems archaic when I browse and can pick out key words. I like the opportunity for feedback and do appreciate the possibility of distractionand must say with the good tutoring recieved, the time delay for feedback is on a minimal time scale.

wow pete you are in catch up mode! I can see lots of evidence you have been doing quite a bit of reading and thinking about flexible learning. You have mentioned lots of very interesting information about the history of FL at Otago Polytechnic. We have come a long way since I did my first online teaching in 1998.

I agree it is best to offer blended learning esp when people expect to come on-campus to face-to-face classes - however you can enhance the experience with online learning. Some good discussion on ideas around open, networked, RPL and the Modern Internet. And a timely reminder and discussion about the stages to go through when transitioning to authentic learning.

I reckon students do appreciate prompt feedback though I am not convinced about the need for instant messaging instead of discussion forums. I use gmail so get a lot of quick questions from colleagues and students who also use it and can see me online. Skype is the same though I tend not to be logged in unless I am using it. It can get very disruptive.

I guess that is why they call it disruptive technology. :)
I have found since doing a lot of online projects and teaching that my ability to focus on reading one article has lessened. I now tend to scan quickly and have gotten really good at picking out the important stuff quickly. How about yourself?

Nice to see you using Del.icio.us Pete. I wonder if you searched for tags like Firetraining, flexiblelearningfire or just a general search on Del.icio.us to possible uncover tags we are not thinking of... let us know (in your blog) how it goes

Pete no need to be daunted by others' plans - some are much more advanced than others, and if you work through the FL plan template (http://wikieducator.org/Flexible_learning_development_plan_template), yours will fill out as well.

Pete great to see you have already got an excellent system in place to assess what will help your learners learn flexibly. Learning preferences can be so variable can't they.

I can understand you finding the whole idea of "put[ting] this plan into action and how far ...[to] go, It could take quite some time. " At the moment it is best to keep your plan simple - you can always build on it. and again I reiterate, you do not have to develop it for this course - so be realistic in your timeline.

Pete your ideas are great! You have written a very thorough background abot the project. Remember for this course you only have to prepare a plan of how you will design your course/resources - not actually develop it all.

you need to think about how you will ensure access and equity, sustainability etc as outlined in the FL plan template- http://wikieducator.org/Flexible_learning_development_plan_template

some of this stuff we have still to cover in the next few weeks. (I will send the presentations on CD - have not forgotten.)
